Career Path

How it all started...

While attending ITT, I was employed by TDSI, which was a joint contract between Ford Motor Company and the Norfolk Southern and CSX Rail Lines. My experience grew as I became fluent in all interoffice administration from payroll to inventory management. When I graduated from ITT, I was approached by several companies; including, Intel, AMD, and Canon for employment opportunities. Since my mother was not of good health I opted to stay in Virginia and accept the offer made by Canon to work in their national call center.  I have been working for Canon (www.canon.com) since 1996 in various roles.

My Career at Canon

At Canon ITS I started in the technical support department taking inbound phone calls back in 1996. I quickly was promoted to Senior Technician. During my tenure I also had the opportunity to assist in the development of Canon’s Quality Assurance Department, since then I was instrumental in the technical training for Canon’s Small Office Home Office division. After establishing these departments and curriculums I was encouraged to accept a promotion to the Customer Relations Department. After seeing my abilities I was quickly tasked with representing the Office of the President; where I handled a multitude of projects for Canon’s Executives including but not limited to the following; correspondence to the President’s Office and Executive Officers, Better Business Bureau inquiries, Attorney General case assistance, Consumer Affairs case assistance, Liaison between Canon divisions and consumer contacts, Media inquiries, and assistance to Canon’s Legal Department.  It enabled me to learn many paralegal processes.  I was promoted in late 2008 to the Program Management Group, in which I will be involved in a number of wide range management projects, which often involve making processes more efficient and customer friendly.  In the end the goal is to help Canon achieve its goal of aligning all its aspects with Kyosei.

People often ask me, "what do you do..."

"What is a Program Specialist?   To make the definition as simple and straight forward as possible, the Program Management team is essentially a liaison or ambassador between Canon ITS and Canon USA to include its business partners and subsidiaries.   We essentially build bridges.  We showcase all the programs and support options available through Canon Information Technology Services; externally and internally we work with different departments and teams to streamline and maximize these program’s effectiveness to support our customers and maintain brand loyalty.  We work to close-the-gap between our core business partners and the front line; to raise the bar, keeping our “world class” support #1 in the industry and anticipating what tomorrow's demands might be.   We accomplish this by maintaining our moral obligation to Kyosei, Canon’s corporate philosophy and guiding principle. "

Why Canon?

Canon’s corporate philosophy is KYOSEI, which means "All people, regardless of race, religion or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future." The origin of the word Canon came from Kwanon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, which embodies the vision of Canon as a world leader in innovation and social responsibility. The reason I have not explored other career opportunities is because of Canon's corporate philosophy and origin of the company's name deeply inspire me. It is an amazing feeling to work for a company, that at it's heart, appreciates the same values as I do. Canon is an excellent company to work for and be a part of. Canon sincerely cares about the world community and the impact our business has on it.

People have often asked me, "Why have you stayed with Canon so long."  I never really had a clear answer until recently when Canon put a short video on our website that answers the question perfectly. Below is a link so you can watch the video.  (Yes, the Smart Car is mine!)

My Part-Time Adventures

During my early years at Canon I decided to also take on a part-time job at Sam’s Club. I started as a sales person in their electronics department. When management discovered my skill level they quickly promoted me to the Human Resources department (PTC or Personnel and Training Center) to fill in for the manager on the weekends in training new hires, processing payroll, updating schedules and running reports. I was starting enrollment in their manager-in-training program when, due to personal reasons, I decided to resign and focus on my career solely at Canon and my family life.  I have gone back and done seasonal work for Sam's Club both as an associate and with their demo vendor Advantage Sales and Marketing where I prepare and demonstrate different products around the club.  I enjoy the customer interaction and contrast to what I do on a daily basis at Canon.  I can honestly say I love the work I do for both companies.
